A Welcome Return To Dishoom

Dishoom – Covent Garden

One of the things that Lesley will often do when eating dinner is watch s food programme on TV. The selection might include Great British Menu, Master Chefbut our favourite is Somebody Feed Phil. This has the host, writer and presenter, Phil Rosenthal travelling across the world meeting local people and trying all sorts of food including local delicacies. In season 3, episode 3 he visits London and has breakfast in dishoom. We decided next time we were there we would try it and we were not disappointed.

Returning this year we appeared a little too eager having arrived before the opening time, not only that, we had to shelter from the affects of storm Kathleen!

On opening we were welcomed in by their attentive and wonderful staff. The feel is described as like the Iranian influenced restaurants in Bombay in the early 20thcentury. It is certainly atmospheric and welcoming. Beginning with the essential cup of coffee (£3.90) which was not bad, but Lesley and I do prefer coffee which is unusually strong. When it came for food, Lesley opted for the Date & Banana Porridge (£7.90). It is made with organic porridge and oat milk with Medjool dates. Interestingly it a “bottomless” portion and the waiter looked slightly disappointed when Lesley refused the full second portion that was brough to the table!

I had Keema Per Eedu. (£15.90)

It is made with chicken Keema and chicken livers, tipped with 2 runny-fried eggs and Sali crisp chips. I absolutely loved it, just my sort of food, though I recognise it would divide the crowd. It was served with home-made buttery buns that I shared with Lesley.

On a previous visit I had the Wrestler’s Nan Roll which is smoked streaky bacon, pork sausages and fried egg served in a nan bread. It was delicious but is essentially breakfast roll served in nan…so for me it will be chicken livers every time!

There is no question we will return!
